NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Penn State Fayette’s men’s and women’s basketball teams now know who they will be facing in the opening rounds of next week’s USCAA National Basketball Championships to be played on Fayette’s campus Feb. 26-March 2.
The Roaring Lions will see opening round action in Men’s Division II on Wednesday, Feb. 27 when they face Vermont Tech at 8 p.m. Earlier this week, the Knights upset previously top-ranked New Hampshire Technology Institute (NHTI) 80-66 to claim the Yankee Conference title and an automatic berth into the national tournament.
Fayette, seeded 10th in the 10 team field, comes into the contest having won seven of its last eight games – the lone loss a heartbreaker to Penn State Mont Alto in the PSUAC quarterfinals last week.
The Lady Roaring Lions face top-seeded Central Maine Community College, also champions of the Yankee Conference. The Lady Mustangs captured their second consecutive conference title with an 80-74 win over NHTI.
The Lady Roaring Lions have stumbled a bit down the stretch and come into the tournament 5-3 over their last eight games. Fayette dropped an 84-65 decision to eventual PSUAC champion Penn State Beaver on Saturday in the PSUAC semifinals.
This is the fifth consecutive year in which Fayette has hosted the USCAA’s premier championship event. New this year is the Fayette County Hoops Fest which includes a parade and 5K race. For more information visit the National Championshps Website.
